课程名称 Course Title
Biology in Everyday Life

This course is designed for students with limited familiarity with biology and will involve a mix of short lectures and interactive class activities/group work. The course will introduce and explore various biological concepts, focusing on everyday examples to illustrate them. In doing so, we will first discuss science as both a human endeavor and as a way of thinking, including reviewing the scientific method as a framework for both asking scientific questions and answering them to further scientific and human knowledge. The course will also introduce the use of scientific evidence and data in decision making. The course will next introduce the concept of the hierarchy of biological organization and the various emergent properties that appear at each level, including a discussion of cell theory and what makes something "alive" versus "not alive”. Next, we will then delve into the basics (ie. chemistry, genetics, metabolism, evolution, ecology, and homeostasis), all of which intersect and underlie many aspects of biology, focusing on how these concepts are applicable and relevant to everyday life. By the course’s conclusion, students will have a working knowledge of biology as a scientific discipline that impacts them individually in numerous ways each and every day. They will also have a better understanding of themselves as complex organisms and members of our Earth’s ecosystem. Participants will be assessed pass/fail based on their active class participation and completion of in-class work/activities, two short written reflections, and short quizzes demonstrating their understanding of key biological concepts.
