In this class we will read canonical works from the Chinese and English poetic traditions. Specifically, we will read poems that treat themes common to both traditions, such as love, nature, empire, and explore their linguistic features, poetic conventions, as well as the cultural and historical factors embedded in these works. We will also explore Chinese and Western theories and criticism on poetry and interpretation. The course is mostly conducted in close textual and contextual analysis. Students will learn to appreciate the linguistic, literary, and cultural aspects of Chinese and English poetry, which in turn will deepen their understanding of Chinese and Western culture and history.
