Nanotechology and nanomedicine in pharmaceutical sciences

This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the role that nanotechnology will play in pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences for both diagnostics and therapeutics in the 21th century. This short course will cover how this rapidly developing field will impact human health and the challenges involved. It will start by introducing the concept of nanotechnology, the fundamental physics, chemistry and biology underpinning the modern nano-pharmaceutical sciences. Special emphasis will be given to equip the students with the knowledge of nano-bio interface (how nanomaterials and drugs interact with human blood, cells and tissues). After the discussion of modern technology platforms that are used to characterize nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems, the current application of nanotechnology in pharmaceutical sciences will be explored. All examples of the application of nanomedicine will be taken from current SCI publications. Latest development in the application of nano-pharmaceutical sciences in medicine will be introduced via examples in nano carrier-based drug delivery, cancer nanomedicine, diagnostic imaging, as well as regenerative medicine. Finally, the potential risks of nanotechnology and how to manage them (nanotoxicology) in pharmaceutical science/industry will be discussed. Specially selected videos have been incorporated into all lectures to illustrate the principles of nano pharmaceutics using most interesting and easily understood mode of teaching. Through this course, the pharmacy students at STU will have a chance to discuss face-to-race with Prof. Duan who is a Clarivate Analytics world Highly Cited Researcher-2017 (in the field of Pharmacology/toxicology).
