Geospatial Analysis in Public Health Studies
There is an increasing interest in understanding how health and disease are impacted by geographic location. Monitoring epidemics, tracking disease outbreaks, identifying environmental factors that may promote or hinder health, and evaluating geographic accessibilities of health services are important in preventing future illness and achieving wellness in a population. This course provides an introduction to geospatial analysis used in epidemiology and public health studies, including concepts, theories, methodologies, technologies, and case studies.

1 TBA Introduction to GIS and Spatial Analysis The first section covers fundamentals of GIS, including spatial database construction, operations, and basic spatial analyses.
2 TBA Basic Principles of Disease Mapping The second section is about mapping diseases and detection of disease-environment associations, including basic statistical and cartographical knowledge involved in these practices.
3 TBA Basic Analysis of Geographic Access to Healthcare Services The third section is about assessment of spatial access to healthcare services, as well as associated social justice and disparity issues.
4 TBA Health Data for Mapping and Spatial Analysis This section first introduces commonly used data in mapping and spatially analyzing disease and health issues, and then describes basic procedures to compile them to make the usable in an GIS environment."
