This course will cover the huge increase in the prevalence of myopia that has taken place worldwide, but especially in Asia, over the past 50 years. It will review possible causes underlying the increased prevalence. Discussion of possible treatments (spectacle and contact lenses) and pharmacological agents that both correct myopia and attempt to slow its progression will also be included. Seven two-hour lecture sessions will be scheduled, plus an eighth session for the written examination. The instructor will seek to make the lecture sessions as interactive as possible, and both questions and class discussions are strongly encouraged.
