Dementia in Aged Care (Lecture Series)

"Worldwide, people are living longer, and the population is ageing. Old age is the strongest known risk factor for dementia. Currently, approximately 55 million people have dementia and this is expected to rise to 78 million and 139 million in 2030 and 2050 respectively. Dementia has significant social and economic implications (e.g., costs for direct medical and social care) as well as informal care burden and stress relating to physical, emotional and financial pressures experienced by families. At present, there is no treatment to cure dementia and emphasis is required on dementia care. This course is designed to help students understand dementia including behavioural and psychological symptoms, person-centred approaches and care interventions with an emphasis on dementia care technologies Following the completion of this course, students will have a better understanding of dementia to inform on their future clinical care of people living with dementia and their families and, specifically, understand the potential roles of technologies in dementia care."
