课程名称 Course Title
Cancer Biology and Precision Oncology

In 2018 there were 17.0 million new cancer cases and 9.5 million cancer deaths worldwide. These figures are expected to increase significantly in the next 20 years due to the growth and aging of the population. Hence, efforts are focused on identifying means to reduce the burden of the disease. Gene editing, genomic and proteomic technologies have allowed an enormous expansion in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that drive tumour growth, paving the way for a new era in personalised cancer treatment. This UIP course aims to give students an appreciation of the key properties of cancer cells (the hallmarks of cancer) that enable tumour initiation and progression, as well as an understanding of the important role that the microenvironment plays in facilitating this progression. The course also aims to provide students with an understanding of new omics technologies and how these technologies are being used to advance precision oncology. Learning outcomes By the end of the course the students will be able to: ? Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the molecular basis of cancer. ? Demonstrate a critical appreciation of how this understanding is being used to advance precision oncology. ? The capacity to analyse and critically evaluate research outputs and apply creative and inventive thinking to develop appropriate hypothesis/solutions. ? The student will be able to communicate basic and cancer research effectively Delivery methods The course will be delivered using interactive lectures, literature reviews, recorded podcasts, group based workshops aimed at providing practical experience in data analysis and bioinformatics and tutorials where students discuss relevant research papers
