The ability to write interesting and persuasive English language research papers and manuscripts is fast becoming a globally essential skill for professors and higher-education students. Based on my 35 years of experience as a scholarly researcher, writer, and editor, this class presents key elements of successful academic writing. Topics covered included problem finding, basic writing techniques, and elements of writing style. The class focuses on the following question: What do English language journals and reviewers look for when making publication decisions? Although the course emphasizes social science writing, it should also be of value to anyone wishing to present their scholarly English writing more effectively. Course Activities: Lecture, visual presentation, and discussion; individual and small group written practice. Readings: To be provided by professor Outcomes: Students will demonstrate understanding of key course topics via individual and group written assignments. The final project will be to write an effective introductory rationale for a research manuscript.
