Bionanotechnology

This course aims to develop your understanding of micro/nanotechnology for applications in biomedical field including medical diagnostics, bioimaging, and therapeutics. pathways to molecular manufacturing, molecular transport, and nanosensors for medical applications. It will start with introduction to the current development of bionanotechnology with an emphasis on the unique properties of different inorganic and organic nanostructures and new opportunities that the nanostructures offer to address major challenges in biomedicine. It will then cover the structural and physiochemical properties of nanostructures such as quantum dots, plasmonic nanostructures and magnetic nanoparticles and how to tailor their surface chemistry for biomedical applications. With an introduction to major health challenges, biomedical applications of nanostructures in diagnostics and therapeutics will be discussed. Classical examples such as in vitro diagnostic (IVD) devices and controlled drug delivery will be analysis to promote design principles of bionanotechnology and nanomedicine. The design principles and functions of the components of IVD devices ranging from classical paper-based assays to recently developed wearable devices will be discussed. Commonly used signal detection mechanisms for on-site applications will be introduced for different molecular targets. Recent development in nanotechnology offers new possibilities of nanomedicine formulations of drug candidates and integrating multiple therapeutic modalities in the single formulation for synergistic treatment effects. This module will also summarize nanomedicine commercialized and under evaluations and discuss the current challenges and future perspectives. The knowledge will prepare students for the potential further training in biomedical research, and development in bioengineering/medical industry.
