"The present course will be dedicated to the basics of membrane and membrane processes for bioprocess applications. It will impart knowledge on membrane-based technologies, membrane synthesis, materials and rejection mechanisms, design of membranes and specific modules to meet different requirements, mass transfer limitation and industrial application (membrane bioreactors, membrane in biorefineries…) etc., which will help the participants to enhance their knowledge and skill. The primary objectives of the course are as follows: i) Exposing participants to the fundamentals of membrane separations (pressuredriven processes, membrane contactors, membrane bioreactors), membrane synthesis and rejection mechanism ii) Imparting knowledge on the design of membranes and modules iii) Building in confidence and capability amongst the participants in the application of membrane separation coupled with bioprocesses. Throughout this course, example will be taken from industrial applications and various past and on-going research projects. A strong focus will be given on the specificity of applying membrane for biofluids purification in terms of process performances, process operation, membrane fouling/cleaning/ageing. The interest of replacing conventional separation techniques (such as solvent extraction, distillation, etc) by advanced membrane-based technologies (membrane distillation, pervaporation, enzymatic treatment + ultrafiltration, etc) will be demonstrated from an environmental point of view introducing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to real-life cases. During the course, emphasis will be put on interaction among the students and between the students and the professor (Quizzes, work in groups…)"
