Energy storage material and device

Electrochemistry is at the heart of many important energy storage and conversion applications, including capacitors, fuel cells and batteries. However, many research efforts getting published in these fields are originating rather from materials science and frequently do not consider some fundamental electrochemical basics. The course will cover these basics, starting from general considerations concerning electrochemical cells, getting into fundamental aspects of electrolytes (e.g., solvation and dissociation, conductivity and mobility) and electrodeelectrolyte interfaces (e.g., double layer formation as well as the thermodynamics and kinetics of charge transfer reactions), and closing with an overview of selected electrochemical methods and applications; the latter including amongst others lithium and sodium batteries. The course shall provide the students with a solid background in electrochemistry, linked to current research questions in the field of electrochemical energy storage, in order to enable them to critically evaluate current research activities and identify potential subjects of interest for their own studies.
