Homo sapiens’ impact on planet Earth is undoubtedly likely to be preserved across the globe in the geological rock record. How will future geoscience look back on our fossil present? How can today’s geoscientists understand the challenges of living sustainably on Earth today from the history recorded in the rocks of the distant past? How can changes in the way our species interacts with its habitat place us at increasing risk, or position us in more comfortable security, on our dynamic planet? I will attempt to shed light on at least one of these questions, while possibly raising others, as I explore how Earth Science can guide society through the Anthropocene.
