The main aims of this short course are to teach the students to: 1. Critically analyse and assess smart grid operation and management objectives and functionality. 2. Evaluate and review methodologies and algorithmic structures for operational control of smart grids. Course Content 1. The behaviour of a smart grid from the viewpoint of measurable and controllable quantities. 2. Technical and financial aims of smart grid operation within de-regulated environments. 3. Energy balance and intermittency in smart grid operation and management. 4. Reduction of energy losses and environmental impact through efficient real-time management. 5. Algorithms for state estimation; security analysis; optimal generator scheduling and dispatch; demand forecasting; and load-frequency control. 6. Hardware and software structures in a competitive environment. 7. The role of the human operator and the human-computer interface.
