Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology

Nanomaterials and nanotechnology have become a rapid growth area. This course provides an introduction to students who enter into this exciting area of research. The course will focus on major routes for the synthesis of nanostructured materials, characterization, and fundamental principles governing nanomaterials. Selected applications of nanomaterials in chemical engineering applications, such as separation and catalysis, will be studied. Teaching Objectives: The objectives of this course are to provide students an overview of nanoscale phenomena in metals, semiconductors and other materials. It will cover the fundamental aspects of quantum confinement in semiconductors and metals, electronic properties of nanowires and carbon nanotubes, surface plasmon resonances in nanomaterials, photonic crystals, etc. Special attention will be paid to preparation of those nanomaterials and integration into applications. In addition, the course will also provide an overview of the experimental techniques used for structural characterization of nanomaterials. After the course students should be familiar with fundamental principles for nanomaterials, recent technology in nanomaterial preparation, device fabrication, and characterization. Specifically they will be able to: Obtain knowledge about methods for preparation of nanomaterials, ranging from single nanoparticles to three-dimensional nanostructures, Demonstrate the understanding for important thermodynamic and kinetic theories related to such processing, Understand fundamental chemistry and physics of nanomaterial Development of analytical skill for methods of characterizing the structure and properties of nanomaterials, Demonstrate the knowledge of current and emerging applications for nanomaterials.
