"? The student gets acquainted with basic concepts of structure and properties of condensed matter from an experimental and theoretical point of view. Starting from generic and specific molecular interactions the student will become familiar with complex phenomena in disordered or partially ordered many body systems, i.e. soft matter and complex fluids. Different types of soft matter will be considered (simple fluids, supercooled liquids and glasses, liquid crystals, colloids, synthetic polymers and biopolymers) and discussed from the perspective of self-organization and hierarchy of order/disorder transitions. ? The student is capable of independently solving problems based on the available material and the known mathematical techniques. ? Based on the analysis of scientific publications that are directed towards a broader audience (Nature, Science or comparable), the student is able to properly situate recent breakthroughs in the fields of physics of soft condensed matter, as well as to correctly evaluate the importance of these breakthroughs and to a certain extent also understand the underlying physics.
