课程名称 Course Title
Product Development and Additive Manufacturing

"Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D Printing, is a modern and high quality technical and research field which opens many possibilities for prototyping, product design, mold making, biomedical applications and innovative product development. By use of AM technologies, complex 3D products can be designed and manufactured in biomedical and technical polymers and composites, metals or ceramics, which is not possible with conventional processing methods such as extrusion and injection molding. It also offers the added-value tool of design freedom. Even short-run production series can be produced. Also, AM technologies offer a solution for both Industry 4.0 innovation. Besides its technical advantages, it is a sustainable production method. Within the course, firstly, the different technologies of Additive Manufacturing will be explained, including their commercial and technical benefits. Afterwards, we will go deeper into the different AM technologies, their working principles, benefits and challenges for the polymer and composite industry, academic research environment and its sustainability advantages. Attention will be spent on the effect of AM technologies on material behavior and innovation. Secondly, case studies will be worked out with examples of industrial and research projects and products. Afterwards, design methodologies for plastic products will be discussed, offering the students an in-depth understanding of difference compared with design for metals and conventional product design with polymers and composites. Also, aspects such as applications in scope of mold making and polymer processing will be discussed, including thermal and physical-chemical behavior. Finally, students will learn via individual and group-based projects how to produce their developed products via low-cost Fused Filament Fabrication FFF 3D Printing methodology, both at software and hardware level. Within this online course, besides standard life streaming classes, students will also learn how to use 3D Printing technologies via videos and online life streaming remote laboratory demonstrations about how to prepare and use a 3D Printer to produce their own design. Open-source software will be made available before start of the course, so that students can upload in advance the needs software and their personal laptop."
