The course, which takes a system-oriented approach, is based around the following subject areas: Introduction to mobile and wireless systems; System aspects of current mobile and wireless communications systems: Second-generation (2G) Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), 2.5G General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), third-generation (3G) (UMTS, High Speed Packet Access (HSPA)), GSM/EDGE (Enhanced Date rate for GSM Evolution) Radio Access Network (GERAN) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN), fourth-generation (4G) Long-Term Evolution (LTE); Regulatory and standardization bodies, fifth-generation (5G) and the Internet of Things; Wireless communications; Local Area Networks (LANs); Personal Area Networks (PANs).
