Humanitarian emergencies, caused by armed conflict, situations of internal violence, and natural or man-made disasters always have a substantial impact on the civilian population. horn among the groups that require special protection and assistance there are civilians forcibly displaced from their homes and other places of habitual residence. Some of them cross internationally recognized borders, some remain in their country of origin. Asylum seekers who manage to cross international borders attempt to obtain protection in the form of refugee status and others. Those who stay in their countries of origin arc not protected by the international refugee regime. Forced population movements today have the greatest impact on developing states and produce large numbers of IntemallyDisplaced Persons (IDPs) who greatly outnumber refugees and individuals with supplementary forms of protection. The aim of this short course is to present the current chaJJenges to the protection of forced migrants - refugees and !DPs. This proposal fosters an interdisciplinary approach to addressing forced migration by combining legal and institutional analysis with methodology of international relations studies. Qualitative analysis will be associated with data meta analysis which allows to witness broader trends in forced migration.
