Sinology, in the context of area studies, has a long-standing tradition in the West, especially in Europe. While Chinese Studies is a relatively modern term referred to the study of China in various perspectives like economy, history, international relations, language, literature and films, philosophy and religion, etc. It usually refers to the research from Western perspectives, however, it also explores how Chinese scholars has shaped their own civilisation. With recent China’s rapid growth, Chinese studies as a discipline has been developed and expanded very quickly in many countries and many research fields. Therefore, it would be beneficial for the students to attend this class to access the recent development of this discipline and cultivate an international perspective in this area.This course will be delivered in four topics. First topic will focus on language, literature and film will be introduced, especially on Chinese language film, Chinese literature post-Mao, Dialect groups of the Chinese language, and socio-linguistic aspects of the Chinese language.Second topic: Society, especially on consumer society, family relations in contemporary China, gender and work in contemporary China, urban change and modernity.Third topic: International relations, especially on China and the world, China and Africa, Confucius Institute and United States-China relations, 1949-present. Fourth topic: Philosophy and religion, especially on ancient Chinese religion, Buddhism, Confucius and Daoism.Course outcomes: Firstly, students would be able to achieve a better understanding in the history, the development, the features, and updated research topics of this discipline. Secondly, students would be cultivated to establish an analytic ability to evaluate the academic motivation and value of these topics. Thirdly, students would be able to analyse developments in China in a global context; Finally, students would be able to apply some disciplinary approaches through which current knowledge about Chinese Studies has developed.
