The theme of this course is the interdisciplinary direction of contemporary historiography, exemplified and characterized by the rise and characteristics of emotions history, digital history and artificial intelligence. This trend, which began in the last phase of the last century, is in a certain sense a backlash against postmodernist and postcolonial critiques of modern historiography, and demonstrates the bifurcation between historical theory and historical practice in the development of contemporary historiography. Understanding this trend is pivotal for students majoring in history today, as it concerns the future development of historical research and poses new challenges to the current state of history education. The pedagogy for the course is to combine lecture and discussion; the latter will be led by the teaching assistant. Recommended readings will be selected articles in both Chinese and English, which will be distributed to students beforehand for their preparation for the lectures and discussions.
