Seminar on Qing Archives and Tibetan Studies

This seminar introduces primary sources with a focus on the history of the Qing dynasty and the Tibetan local government from the seventeenth to nineteenth century. Each class we will read different Qing archives related to Tibetan affairs, especially documents ranging from the periods of Hong Taiji, Shunzhi, Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong etc. This course focuses on the reading and translation skills of primary sources, especially on the understandings of Qing archives and Sino-Tibetan terms. By reading assigned texts closely, this class will lead students to practice the methods of philology. In so doing, this course aims to cultivate undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in the Qing-Tibetan history by emphasizing how to utilize firsthand documents to conduct original research. This class will start with reading Chinese documents. Enrolled students are expected to possess fluent reading skills in classical Chinese. Multilingual knowledge of Tibetan, Mongolian, and Manchu are not required, though students might find it helpful. This course is mainly for graduate students in Chinese history and Tibetan studies; however, ungraduated who have strong interests in the topic are encourage to enroll the class. While reading primary sources, the instructor will also introduce new directions of recent scholarship and research methods to students.
