The history of French sinology dates back to the creation of the Chair of Sinology at the Collège de France in 1814. Several academic institutions, including the Collège de France and the Inalco, have contributed to the development of the discipline. French sinologists, from Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat (1788-1832) to Edouard Chavanne (1865-1918) and Marcel Granet (1884-1940, have used methods acquired in the humanities and social sciences (HSS) in their sinological practices. This course examines the relationship between sinology and the various fields of HSS. We'll look at a few specific cases, such as Chavanne and Granet. The objective is to see how sinology benefits from HSS and how, conversely, sinology influences them. Emphasis will be placed on the links between sinology and philosophy.
