Bilingualism: linguistic, social and cultural perspective

The course is an introduction course for the undergraduate students to the field of bilingualism. It will provide the basic knowledge about second language learning, that could be an important aspect in general education in humanities, social sciences and education. Approach will be comprehensive, so the students will be introduced to the broad scope of topics relevant for understanding bilingualism, the concepts such as linguistic and/or communicative competence, as well as different social contexts in which bilingualism occurs. Considering the relevance and presence of bilingualism in modern society, an additional emphasis will be given to cultural and social aspects of bilingualism

课程大纲 Course Outline
"Aim of the course Students should gain basic knowledge on current theories and practices of bilingual pedagogy, research and education, as well as understand basic theoretical and practical approaches to bilingual development and second language learning. The course will enable students to understand social, cultural and educational issues specific for bilingual individuals. Teaching method Teaching will be student centred teaching, and students will be exposed to lectures, working groups and discussions. Students are expected to attend lectures and participate in group discussions. Interactive learning will be supported. All the lectures will be supported by power-point presentations and handouts. Topics Each teaching hour will cover different topics such as development of bilingualism, learning processes in bilingualism, individual differences, linguistics of bilingualism, different theoretical approaches, psychology of bilingualism, bilingualism and cognition, social context and bilingualism, bilingualism and psycholinguistics, bilingualism and language impairments and bilingualism and cultural context of the modern world. Course outcomes The course should enable students to understand a phenomenon of second language learning, to become familiar with a basic level of knowledge about bilingualism, but at the same time to support their motivation for learning second language in a context of modern society where another language could be an important facilitator for networking and cultural exchange.
