This course will primarily attempt to help law students develop their methodological skills, from cross-disciplinary perspective. Roughly speaking, legal methodology encompasses everything from the techniques used to research through to the process of writing and constructing an argument. In 16 hours of teaching, we will examine different ways of conducting legal scholarship such as a doctrinal approach, comparative approach, and interdisciplinary approach etc. The course shall pay particular attention to empirical methods, not only to make students aware of its potential benefits but also to give some practical guidance as to where to start. The focus of the course will be on private law. However, the methodological skills deployed will be relevant to all areas of legal scholarship.
