Empirical Research in Criminology and Criminal Justice

This course provides students with knowledge of basic principles and applications of current research methodology commonly used in the fields of criminology and criminal justice. The course addresses methods of inquiry, causality, sampling, design, data collection and analysis, coding, and ethics as they pertain specifically to the field of criminology and criminal justice. Survey research, experiments, observational/field work, and interview studies are examined.

"1.Analyze the fundamental characteristics and issues that make science different from other ways of knowing things. 2.Explain ethical and scientific considerations that must be taken into account along with the design and execution of research. 3.Outline the fundamental issues that must be considered in planning a research project. 4.Summarize the different approaches to conceptualization and operationalization and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each in measuring crime. 5.Explore the various techniques (e.g., sampling techniques, survey research, field research, content analysis) available for criminological research."
