课程名称 Course Title
Design and Society

Design is often viewed narrowly as a field which concerns itself with the creation of consumer goods and commodities. But in fact, design has a much larger scope. In this course, we will look at different examples of how design has responded to the needs of society, for example through urban planning, accessible design, design activism, and sustainable design. In this way, we can see that design has a much larger role to play in society both today and in shaping the kind of future that we all aspire to. Additionally, this course will invite students to reflect upon how design and design thinking might continue to address social problems that they observe in their communities, cities, and beyond. Pedagogies: illustrated lecture, question and answer, small group work, research projects, reading materials, oral presentation, discussion groups. Course outcomes ?Students will have a better sense of how design can help to promote social good by responding to problems of human need ?Students will observe case examples of urban planning, accessible design, and sustainable design that show design’s impact upon society around the world ?Students will reflect upon the problems that societies continue to face today that might be addressed or partially addressed by design thinking ?Students will see a wider scope of application of design than is commonly portrayed in the media ?Students will research and present an example of design for social impact ?Students will improve their English vocabulary and fluency in areas related to the course topic
